Web Of TrustThe Web Of Trust (WOT) allows people to add their name to their certificate. When you first obtain a certificate from Thawte, the details within it are your e-mail address, and the name of "Thawte Freemail User". Whilst that sounds naff it actually makes sense. Thawte don't know who you are, and have no way of validating your name. This is where the WOT steps in. To get your name within your certificate, someone needs to testify to your identity. That means meeting up with a "Notary" - someone known and identified to Thawte already, and who has themself been notarised many times. That Notary checks your details on the Thawte database with a number of documents that you produce during a face to face meeting. It sounds like hassle, but is necessary to keep the worth of the certificates. Much more information can be found on Thawte's web site regarding the Thawte Web Of Trust. NotarySo I am an official Notary, and you can find me in the Directory Of Notaries at this location. If you are in my area and would like to be Notarised, please e-mail me at the address given in the directory. |
